Hrishikesh's Centre of Contemporary Dancer & The German Consulate, Mumbai in association with Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai proudly present an evening of Film & Dance as we celebrate the life of famous choreographer/ teacher Gret Palucca. (1902-1993). The leading lights in the German expressive dance movement flourished during the 1920s and 1930s, the fame of this German dancer was mainly based on her teaching work at her own school which she founded in Dresden in 1925. Despite the altercations with GDR cultural officials and the requirements of socialist realism she tried to inspire not only physical but intellectual and artistic creativity and individuality in her students, Ruth Berghaus and Lotte Gosslar among them. Gret Palucca was one of the founding members of the GDR Akademie der Künste and acting vice president from 1965 to 1970. The evening will also see a solo dance performance "Serenata" first performed & choreographed by Gret Palucca in 1931 which is been re-created by choreographer/teacher Hrishikesh Pawar, he himself has studied at the Palucca Schule Hochschule Fuer Tanz, Dresden and is known for his pioneering work towards Dancetheatre in India. Pawar has widely accomplished himself in India and abroad, for creating a rich movement vocabulary he creates through his solo, group choreographies & collaborations. He has also been awarded numerous scholarships and has performed at many prestigious dance festivals, seminars worldwide. Who is your companion ? Is it a person who you can rest your head on? Is it a pet that comes with you on a walk ? Is it a passion that brings you back in the moment ? Or is it just your inner voice that fills up a void in the darkest hour ? 'Loneliness is your only companion', stated Begum Akhtar , an artiste par excellence, whose creative journey was marked with success, failure , passion , pain and anguish. Prof Rita Ganguly , Begum Akhtar's cherished disciple charts Begum ji's emotional and creative expeditions in her aptly titled book "Ae Mohabbat'. Lending her unique perspective, Prof Ganguly not only talks about the insurmountable talent of Begum ji and her style but also her observations of Begum ji - the woman. ; her identity, emotions , influences, expectations, responses and how the fabric of her personality was deeply affected by social, cultural and economic environments. Taking a cue from the book, is Hrishikesh's Centre of Contemporary Dance. Through a 45 minute contemporary theater piece , the centre will elaborate the importance of relationships through the journey of a single man. Attempting to find love and happiness, he eventually finds solitude, forcing him to end his search and reconcile to loneliness. The piece also borders on the responsibilities of an artist and how it may be liberating and burdening to be famous, and how that emotion is similar to being in a relationship. The piece would be performed by 9 dancers and would include pure contemporary technique and elaborate theater elements.
